I can’t say enough good things about Buenos Aires, Argentina. To me Buenos Aires is a Latin NYC full of culture, things to do, great food and diversity. Even with everything there is to do in Buenos Aires you should take some day trips from Buenos Aires.
Only a 45min train ride away, Tigre, an Argentinian town located along the Tigre river delta, is one of the best day trips from Buenos Aires. Tigre is a fairly touristy town with a tropical vibe and lots to explore.
Tigre Delta Tours
The first thing you should do in Tigre is take a Tigre Delta tour. You will feel far away from the bustling streets of Buenos Aires when you enter the waterways of the Tigre Delta. It is the best way to learn about the history and culture of the area and see the unique landscapes.
Kayaking on the Tigre Delta
My main reason for taking a Buenos Aires day tour to Tigre was to go on a night kayaking adventure along the Tigre river. With a group of people from my co-working organization in Buenos Aires we set off in three person kayaks at dusk. As the dusk quickly turned to darkness we only had our headlamps to light our way. Kayaking with additional people should technically be easier because you have more power, but it really is challenging to coordinate your paddling.
What made it even harder was the guide who kept paddling right next to our kayak. In addition to navigating a river and avoiding the banks in the pitch black, we had to keep stopping and maneuvering around his kayak. Not only was he in the way, but he kept shouting directions at us, “right, right, right, stop, stop stop, go, go go”. The rapid fire directions were conflicting. Once you stop a kayak you lose momentum and can’t immediately get going right away. I was at the front of the kayak and the kayaker in the middle agreed with me that we should just stop listening to him and do our own thing.
After about an hour and a half of kayaking we stopped at a house in the middle of nowhere. Was it the guide’s house?….we weren’t really sure. It didn’t matter because our guide proceeded to cook us up some darn good burgers on the grill.
On the way back the guide decided to yell commands to another unlucky kayak team. We paddled so much better on the way home. Coincidence, I think not!
Night kayaking was another new experience for me. I wouldn’t necessarily say I wouldn’t do it again, but after doing it once I think other experiences would be similar. You don’t really see the scenery, which is one of the best parts of kayaking.
Boat Tours on the Tigre Delta
If you don’t want to paddle your own boat, you can also take a relaxing boat tour along the Tigre delta. Although I love kayaking, I would have enjoyed being able to actually see the scenery and all the elegant homes that line the rivers.
What to Do in Tigre, Argentina
Puerto de Frutos
I was really intrigued with the Puerto de Frutos market, the town’s old fruit harbour. It has a tropical and colorful feel that usually leads to a lively place. The thing was, there was hardly anyone at the market. About half the places were closed and the other half were fairly empty. The market is open everyday until 6pm, but when I visited around 4pm it wasn’t completely open. A local later informed me that Sunday is the day to go if you want the bustling market feel.
The layout of the market was interesting and I enjoyed walking around the area. There were some unique items and vendors, but the lack of people gave it an odd vibe when surrounded by the market stalls and a peaceful feeling along the waterfront.

Museums
Tigre is full of art and history museums. There is even a museum dedicated solely to Mate, the nation’s most well known drink.
A day in Tigre is one of the best day trips from Buenos Aires. Let me know in the comments below if you would prefer a boat ride or a kayak trip on the Tigre Delta.
Tigre Visiting Information
How to Get to Tigre from Buenos Aires
Public Transportation
You need a Sube card to ride the train or any other public transportation in Buenos Aires for a very cheap rate. Click here to see a map of vendors selling the card. Reserve some time to find and buy a card. Often a vendor who is supposed to sell the card actually doesn’t.
With your sube card go to Retiro or Belgrano train stations in Buenos Aires.
Take Line Mitre to Tigre (the last stop). The train runs every 10 – 15 minutes during the week and about every 20 minutes on the weekends. Check the schedule here.
The trip takes about 1 hr from Retiro and about 45min from Belgrano.
Within the town you should be able to walk everywhere you want to go.
Tigre Day Tour from Buenos Aires
You can also take a guided day tour from Buenos Aires to Tigre that includes transportation and a Tigre delta boat tour. Another tour includes transportation, the boat tour and a Tigre city tour.
Tours in Tigre
If you get to Tigre on your own you can do a kayaking or boat tour separately.
Different kayaking options and companies are available, including daytime kayak tours. We paid about $16 a person for a night tour with dinner. I found a similar tour that was $85! Despite a little annoyance with the guide, it was a good company and great price.
Toilets
Make sure to bring toilet paper and be prepared to be underwhelmed by the state of the public bathrooms. There were some at the train station in Tigre. Make sure to go to them off to the side before exiting through the metal ticket readers. Public restrooms are also located nearby in the main cruise terminal. Puerto de Frutos market has toilets in a couple of locations. They have bathroom attendants, but you are not required to pay.
No toilets, other than nearby restaurants, for the start and end of the kayaking. In the middle when you stop for dinner there is a nice toilet building.

I am a little confused as to why you were night kayaking. I thought the blog was leading us to a magical destination that you had to see in the dark. I am glad the burgers were yummy. I would love to visit Buenos Aires one day, so will definitely keep this pretty little town in mind when I do.

Haha, yeah night kayaking was a little strange! I think it is one of those things that it is more about the experience than the destination! But it was disappointing to miss out on the scenery.

I love reading about day trips from the large cities. I’ve never heard of Tigre before. Would love to walk around the market and along the delta.
Your night kayaking adventure was interesting to read. I’m a terrible kayaker so I probably wouldn’t do it. Unless it was a kayak-night time safari where you can see animals, then I would reconsider.
Thanks for sharing your tips about visiting Tigre.

Tigre was a fun town to visit. There was also daytime kayaking available where you could see the scenery, which would have been nice too.

The fruit market looks like a great place to visit. Too bad everything wasn’t opened, but so nice that it wasn’t crowded. I don’t think I would enjoy the night kayaking much. I’d want to see things. It’s c any that so many places have such horrible toilet conditions. The woods would be a much better option sometimes.

True, it was funny that the best indoor toilet option was actually the one out of the city in the middle of nature!

Thank you so much for the tip on the toilet paper lol! I’ve been wanting to visit Argentina for years, and Tigre looks like somewhere I’d visit. The kayak experience looks like a lot of fun, and surely something you’ll always remember too. I appreciate this insightful post!

Thanks! Argentina is a great place to visit. Tigre is a nice trip outside of Buenos Aires.

Night kayaking? Now that’s something that Sheila and I would definitely want to do. The Puerto de Frutos market is cool too; you can get great bargains in markets like these.

Had no idea about this town! Seems like a fun place to spend a weekend in and the night kayaking especially looks like a really interesting adventure. Thanks for sharing!

I wouldn’t want to kayak on my own, I am really scared of water. Teaming up with others suits me fine 😊
Tigre Dalta looks like a kind of place I would love to spend my vacations in.

It’s nice to have people to share the experience with too!
