Austria is a beautiful country with quaint small towns. Vienna and Salzburg aren’t the only places worth visiting in Salzburg. There are quaint small towns, lake-side villages and mountains to explore. The tyrol region is one area you should add to your Austrian itinerary.

Seefeld

Within the Austrian state of Tyrol, Seefeld is a popular resort town in the Alps. It is a well-known destination for winter skiing and summer hiking.

When we arrived on a May evening it was a ghost town. As we searched for our hotel on foot, we saw hotel after hotel. Most of them appeared to be closed. Almost every restaurant was closed as well. It was an odd feeling staying in what is clearly a big tourist town, but seeing hardly any people around. The next day we saw a few more people out and about, but it was still fairly deserted.

Very cloudy, but you can see the Alps that surrounded the town peeking through in the horizon.

The town center is fairly small, but it is a quaint little area with a few stores and restaurants.

What to Do in Seefeld

Lake Wildsee

Right on the outskirts of town there is a path that goes all the way around Lake Wildsee. It’s perfect for a pleasant stroll with a nice view and opportunity to see some wildlife.

I was pretty close when they finally squawked at me and sent me scuttling backwards.

Hiking & Skiing

The main reason people come to Seefeld is that it is a good base to explore the region. The Seefeld website offers detailed information about activities (mostly hiking & skiing) in the area. There are some themed-walks that I would have loved to do. As you have probably gathered, the outdoor activities are the focus of the area.

Leutaschklamm Gorge

We took a day trip to Mittenwald in Germany and hiked the Leutaschklamm Gorge. Read how to do that here.

Where to Stay in Seefeld

Our alpine hotel, Landhaus Klausnerhof Hotel Garni had a woodsy, ski resort feel. It was within walking distance of the train station. A bit confusing of a walk the first time due to construction and no help from google, but still a good location. The manager was very friendly and more than happy to give recommendations, directions or any help at all. Even though we had delicious breakfasts in the morning and a clean room at night, she was the only worker we saw the whole time during our stay.

Our room was nice, but had separate rooms for the toilet and shower. Be careful of the dangerous one inch ledges in the middle of the night! More than two weeks after our stay I still have a large bruise from my catastrophic fall during the night 🙁

View from our balcony of hotel after hotel!

Next year Seefeld is hosting the nordic skiing championships. It would be interesting to visit the town during a busy season. I am sure it would have a completely different feeling. Yet from what I gathered Seefeld is a base from which people go hiking and skiing. Perhaps in high season the town is still fairly empty during the day, but comes alive a bit more with activity at all the hotels and restaurants. I even spotted a nightclub in this small ~3,000 person town!

Review

We stayed in Seefeld because it was fairly close to the Leutaschklamm Gorge which we were planning on hiking. I had mixed feelings about whether or not it was worth it to stay here, when we could have stayed directly in Mittenwald, Germany within walking distance of the gorge.

In the end I am glad we stayed in the town because we got to explore a bit more of Austria and experience an additional small town. Despite the cloudiness during our visit the region is beautiful and a must to visit. The town itself isn’t necessarily worth a visit, but the surrounding area is. Therefore it is a good base to explore the region from.
