Wow, I just visited my September museum of the month and realized I never wrote about my August museum of the month, the Michigan History Museum. Located in Lansing, Michigan, the history museum was one of my favorite museums I visited this year. It may just be one of the best history museums in the US

What I loved best about the museum was the immersive layout. It reminded me of the Smithsonian history museum in DC a bit. Instead of just displaying the artifacts alongside informational panels all the rooms were designed to match the time period or topic displayed. When learning about the mining history in Michigan you actually need to walk through a pretend mine. For city life in the 1920s you walk down a cobblestone street with stores and establishments, some of which you can visit on the inside as well.

Starting from 14,000 years ago to the 20th century the displays showcase Michigan’s history in chronological order. Another thing I liked is how the museum is laid out for one area to lead into another on an obvious pathway.

While a lot of the things are relevant to USA history in general such as the Great Depression & WWII, there is a focus on the history specific to Michigan with such topics as the auto industry.

I usually say I enjoy the smaller museums best, but this one is a huge museum. We spent about 3 hours wandering throughout the exhibits and could have easily spent more.

Review

One of my favorite museum visits of the year! It is educational, but the displays keep it interesting.

Recommendations

The museum recommends 90 minutes. I would suggest at least 3 hours if you want to see everything and not feel rushed. I could have actually spent even more time in the museum.

FYI

Free parking & admission on Sundays. Parking on weekends is free and $1 an hour during the week. Discount for Michigan State Park holders everyday.

Toilets & Food

Toilets are available on every floor. There was a small snack shop on the first floor. I would recommend eating before or after visiting.
