Have you heard that little rumor floating around that Iceland is one of the most expensive countries to visit? I bet this is where you are hoping that I tell you it is a myth. Sorry to let you down, but I am not going to do that. I will tell you that if there is one country that you don’t want to pay to take a taxi to and from the airport it is in Iceland. I will also share with you the easiest and cheapest options on how to get from Keflavik International Airport to Reykjavík. To clarify, Keflavik International Airport will be the airport you fly into Iceland, not Reykjavík Airport, the domestic airport.

Cheapest Airport Transfers

Taking an airport shuttle is much more economical than a taxi and simpler than trying to time the public buses. There are two main companies for Reykjavík airport transfers: Airport Direct and FlyBus through Reykjavík Excursions.

Airport Direct vs FlyBus

Getting Around Iceland
The beautiful scenery of Iceland!

Airport Direct

  • $16.53 one-way from KEF to Reykjavík main bus terminal.
  • $33.05 round-trip from KEF to Reykjavík main bus terminal and Reykjavík main bus terminal to KEF.
  • You need to choose a departure time from KEF. This can be risky with the possibility of delayed flights, lost luggage paperwork or a hold-up going through customs.
  • A flexible ticket that allows you to take any bus from KEF to Reykjavík main bus terminal is available for $2.49 more ($19.02 total one-way)
  • For an additional $7.89 you can be dropped off directly at your hotel. First you will need to change buses and transfer your luggage at the main bus terminal. Most likely you will be dropped off near your accommodation, not directly at it if you are staying in the city center. See the FYI section below for more information.
  • If you prefer a transfer directly to your hotel without switching buses you can book one for $37.29 one way or $74.57 both ways.
  • Free WiFi onboard

*All prices in USD without a discount.

FlyBus

  • $24.90 one way from KEF to Reykjavík BSÍ bus terminal.
  • $45.67 round-trip from KEF to Reykjavík BSÍ bus terminal and Reykjavík BSÍ bus terminal to KEF.
  • Flexible – Departs from KEF with all arriving flights. You can take any airport transfer bus with your ticket.
  • For an additional $8.31 you can be dropped off at your hotel. Please note you will most likely will still be dropped off near your accommodation, not directly at it. You will also need to change buses and transfer your luggage at the main bus terminal. See the FYI section below for more information.
  • Free WiFi onboard

*All prices in USD without a discount.

Blue Lagoon Transfer

Blue Lagoon Transfer to KEF

Another option for how to get from KEF airport to Reykjavík is to book your transfer along with Blue Lagoon transportation when you arrive or leave. If you are planning a visit to the Blue Lagoon you will save money on the transfer to and from the airport and the blue lagoon by combining them.  I recommend going on your last day if you have an evening flight to relax after all your adventures and before your hours sitting in a plane.

The Blue lagoon is about 45 minutes from Reykjavík and about 20 minutes from KEF airport. I found Guide to Iceland to be the cheapest option at $38 without a discount. With the company you reserve a pick-up time in Reykjavík and then you can take any of the departures from the Blue Lagoon to the airport later in the day. You need to buy your blue lagoon entrance ticket separately. Make sure you check that the blue lagoon is available before booking your transportation.

How I Transferred to and from KEF Airport

Blue Lagoon transportation
Getting ready to relax before my evening flight!

I used FlyBus to go from KEF Airport to Reykjavík BSÍ Bus Terminal. With a discount I received from an Arctic Adventures day tour confirmation email, I was able to pay less for FlyBus than Airport Direct and have flexible timing. My plan was to walk from the bus terminal to my guesthouse (Eric the Red Guesthouse). When I arrived at BSÍ I wasn't able to store one of my pieces of luggage as planned, so walking was out of the question. I could have paid to go on another bus with FlyBus that would drop me off at a bus stop near my guesthouse, but I opted for a taxi. The taxi went directly to my guesthouse and only cost slightly more than the bus because it was a short distance. Plus I would have had to wait for the bus, but taxis were available.

On my last day in Iceland I used Guide to Iceland to take me to the Blue Lagoon and the KEF airport. A bus picked me up at the bus stop near my guesthouse and then took me to the BSÍ Bus Terminal where I switched to another bus to take to the Blue Lagoon. I stored my luggage at the Blue Lagoon for a small fee and later took the bus to the airport at one of the designated times.

Here are some of the best discounts to lower the prices above!

KEF Airport to Reykjavík FYI

Luggage Storage

Luggage Storage in Reykjavík, Iceland
Yes I overpack, but I was coming back from a year abroad in Russia!

At this time KEF international airport does not have luggage storage. The BSÍ Bus Terminal where FlyBus drops off and picks up has storage lockers. For more information on luggage storage at the bus terminal and other locations in Reykjavík check this site

Make sure you check the dimensions of the lockers ahead of time and the maximum amount of time you can store your luggage! My monstrosity didn't fit in the lockers at the BSÍ Bus Terminal. Can you see why I didn't want to haul my luggage around more than I had to?

The Blue Lagoon can store any size luggage for an extra fee. You have one locker that medium sized items such as backpacks can fit. I fit both my backpack and satchel into the locker.

Timing

It takes approximately 45min to get between KEF airport and Reykjavík. That's the same amount of time between Reykjavík and the Blue Lagoon.  Driving between KEF airport and the Blue Lagoon takes about 20min.

Bus Stations in Reykjavík

Note that there are two frequently used bus stations in Reykjavík.

1. Airport Direct drops off and picks up at the main bus station in Reykjavík: Skogarhlid 10, 105 Reykjavik.

2. FlyBus picks up and drops off at Reykjavík City Center (BSÍ) Bus Terminal: 101 Reykjavík, Iceland

Bus Stops in Reykjavík

Reykjavík has a restriction on buses stopping in the city. This means that regardless of what company you use, if you pay extra to have a drop off at your chosen location (not the main bus stations), you may be dropped off at the nearest bus stop to your chosen location. Use this map to find out where the nearest designated bus stop is for your accommodation. Check the walking distance from the main bus terminal to your hotel and the designated bus stop to your hotel. Depending on your accommodation location it may not be that much more walking from the main economy bus stop and it may be cheaper and easier to book a taxi for the remaining distance directly to your hotel instead.

This is good to know since Iceland is on my list for either later this year or next. Now, if only you had a Part II post that explains that Iceland isn’t that expensive after all! 🙂

Haha, yeah wish I had some more tips to help lower the costs. I can tell you that Bonus is the cheapest grocery store chain in Iceland and you can save a lot of money for activities by not going out to eat! Iceland is definitely worth the cost though!

Thank you for some nice tips to try and crack up in Iceland. Your suggestions are empirical and highly useful for a budget traveler like me. I am happy to know that BSI Bus terminal has a luggage storage. That news is such a relief as i remember having booked a hotel in an alien city only to keep my baggage safe!

I used FlyBus too to get to Reyjkavik from Keflavik Airport and I found it very efficient. At BSI Bus Terminal I took another bus and honestly the wait was not long at all. But if a taxi ride from BSI Bus Terminal to your guesthouse costed pretty much the same, than good choice!
I know there is also another company that does the same service, it’s Grayline. I didn’t know there was also Guide to Iceland.
This is a very useful post as this is exactly the information I was looking for when I traveled to Iceland, as I knew that a taxi would have been out of discussion! 😀

Glad to know that it would be helpful to future visitors! Also thanks for sharing that the wait for the 2nd bus with FlyBus wasn’t very long.

This is great info for anyone going to Reykjavík. In fact I know several people who can use this information. I hope that I’ll be using it in the coming year, as well. And thanks for the links to your other posts on Iceland.

I had heard about this little challenge from my fellow travelers, thank you for putting out such a clear and concise post on how to get from the airport to Reykjavík. This is an incredibly useful tool for any travelers going through Iceland!
