I was planning to have a kayaking trip along the coast in Latchi, another small village about a 5 minute drive from Polis. Unfortunately my trip got cancelled at the last minute. I was really bummed, but the number one rule of travel is to be okay with a change of plans and enjoy the day anyway.

I quickly looked into other options and I found a boat trip in Latchi. The town was only a 40 minute or so walk away so I set out on foot. I kept ending up going the wrong direction. When I was supposed to turn there wouldn’t be road to turn on and when I would find a road google maps would tell me I was going the wrong way. After trying multiple ways and just ending up going back and forth on the outside of the town I finally gave up and took a taxi. There was actually sidewalks for my most of way to Latchi, it seemed so simple. Oh well I didn’t want to risk having plan b not work either.

I arrived in Latchi with just enough time for a quick walk along the marina before boarding my boat, the Nafsika II, for my three hour cruise. I am sure it is different during the summer, but there was not a lot of people on the boat and thus very relaxing.

We sailed close to the coastline. The scenery changed from the buildings of Latchi to the trees of the Akamas Peninsula National Park, where I was the day before.

We stopped for about an hour in the blue lagoon for a swim. We were told we could swim around between the beach and the boat. The beach looked so far to swim! I’m very comfortable in water usually, but I am not the strongest swimmer so I was a little nervous about swimming too far away from the boat and not being able to get back.

I also found out that the water was about 65 degrees and let me tell you, it was chilly! On my first attempt I just couldn’t make myself get off the ladder at the back of the boat and fully submerge myself in the water. I thought why am I making myself do something I don’t want to do? It was more  a fear of being cold and uncomfortable than the water I guess.

How can I not swim in this water? I thought as I sat on the back of the boat. I think I tortured myself more than necessary by how slowly I climbed down the ladder to get in on my 2nd attempt. I stood on the bottom rung giving myself a little pep talk before I did the final plunge.

I did it! Just like these things always go, I LOVED being in the water. It really wasn’t as cold as I hyped myself up to think it was. I swam around and even swam to the beach and sat in the sand to let the waves splash my legs. I swam about leisurely until my boat sounded the horn and I had to head back on board. A few other swimmers behind me shouted “wait for us!”. I wanted to stay in the water, but a secluded beach would not be a good place to be left behind with nothing but a swimsuit!

As we headed back I quickly dried off in the sun and enjoyed the free fruit onboard. One was kaishia, I think. It is a small, juicy yellow fruit with a pit.

Back on land I had a peaceful dinner along the water watching all the boats come in for the evening and get cleaned up and ready for the next day.

In the evening I was able to time my departure to be able to take a bus back to Polis, explore a bit more there and then take a bus back to Paphos in the evening.

How to get there

If you are coming from Pafos, Karevella station in the old town, take bus 645 to the main station in Polis. Buses do not run often so make sure to check the schedule. Tickets can be bought on the bus are very cheap. 

From Polis take bus 622 to Latchi. There are two stops in Latchi. One is a little before the marina with the restaurants and boat tours. The other is right after by Latchi beach. Bus info here. This is the same bus that keeps going to the Baths of Aphrodite in Akamas Peninsula National Park.

If bus times do not line up to go to Latchi from Polis you can go to the bus station and ask them to call you a taxi. It is more expensive of course, but reasonable.

FYI

There are no public toilets at the bus station in Polis. If you turn right after coming out of the station and walk down the street for about 3 minutes you will find free toilets on the left-hand side of the street. I didn’t see any public toilets in Latchi, but there should be some at the beach.

I was on the Nafsika II for the boat tour and there were toilets and changing rooms on board, as well as a hose for rinsing off. They also offered free fruit. 

Where to Stay in Latchi

Unless you are renting a car it is probably easiest to stay in Paphos and take a bus to Polis and Latchi. If you want to stay in Latchi there are some nice private villas available.
