Waking up to sunshine and beautiful blue skies is something I will never take for granted again. It’s the best way to start a day full of exploring.

Today I took about a one hour journey, on a very hot bus, to Polis, a small town on the north-west coast of Cyprus.

There is one main street with the touristy shops and the majority of the town’s restaurants.

Away from this street the town felt very local. I observed many of the restaurant owners and shopkeepers talking with each other and buying produce directly from a farmer’s truck.

From what I could tell there didn’t appear to be a whole lot to do right in Polis other than eating, wandering and visiting one museum. I think it is nice to have a bit of an amble through local areas when visiting a new country though.

In the early afternoon and again in the evening I wandered around in all directions in the town. I enjoyed the lovely little homes nestled within the vegetation on the outskirts of town.

Something I was beginning to notice about Cyprus was the contrast of buildings. In very close proximity to each other you could find a well-kept villa and an abandoned, run down house. In most places I have visited it seems like there are good areas and bad areas of the town or city. The bad areas have people or activities that most travelers would want to avoid. Here the changes in buildings were so frequent that there didn’t seem to be any areas you would necessarily avoid and everywhere felt safe.

How to get there

From Pafos, Karevella station in the old town, take bus 645 to the main station in Polis. Buses do not run often so make sure to check the schedule.

Recommendations

Even if you are someone like me that likes to take their time in new places and wander around, two to three hours would be the maximum you would most likely want to spend here. I recommend going to Latchi to spend some time at the beach or do a boat tour. Also you can go further to the Akamas National Park to hike and see the Baths of Aphrodite.

FYI

You pay the driver €1.50 when boarding the bus. There are no public toilets at the bus station in Polis. If you turn right after coming out of the station and walk down the street for about 3 minutes you will find free toilets on the left-hand side of the street.
