Wondering what to do in Frankfurt, Germany? The city, the central financial hub of the country, is located along the Main River. That means a Frankfurt river cruise should be added to your list of things to do in Frankfurt. A Frankfurt sightseeing cruise is the best way to see the modern skyline of Frankfurt, learn about the city’s history and have a relaxing cruise all times of year.

There are a variety of river cruises in Frankfurt to choose from. I visited Frankfurt during the wonderful Christmas market season, so I choose to take a Goethe Christmas cruise along the Main River. Throughout the cruise I learned about the city of Frankfurt through the eyes of Goethe, a German poet from Frankfurt.

I was one of only three brave souls to venture to the rooftop for some outdoor cruising views. But don’t worry about getting too cold, you can always come right back inside!

You can have a snack or a meal on-board for an extra cost. There is a menu full of German classics such as sausages and the Frankfurt Schnitzel.

Visiting Information

Where

The Frankfurt river cruises start near the Iron Bridge (Eiserner Steg) on the north side of the River Main.

Tickets

1 hour cruise (available in spring, summer & fall) or Christmas Goethe Cruise (available in November & December)

Toilets

On-board the cruises (I was told that in Germany anytime you buy a ticket for something there is required to be a bathroom)

Where to Stay in Frankfurt

The cruises take off on the north side of the River Main near the Iron Bridge (Eiserner Steg). The old town of Frankfurt, where the Christmas market and many of Frankfurt’s attractions are located, is nearby. The Hotel Spenherhaus, where I stayed, is also located nearby.

While the location is great, the price is much more reasonable than accommodation directly around the Römer (city hall) and in the Altstadt (old town). The rooms are kept very clean, the hotel is quiet and there is a full breakfast included every morning. Search for some more options below.
