It’s officially fall now and that means apple orchards, pumpkin patches, hay rides and corn mazes! There is no better place to experience these fall activities than in the Midwest, USA. If you are looking for some fall fun with your friends and family then head to Treinen Farm. One of the best corn mazes near Madison, WI is at Treinen Farm in Lodi.

While Treinen Farm is the place to go if you are looking for one of the biggest corn mazes in Wisconsin, it has so many other fall activities to do. The idyllic countryside location is perfect for taking a hayride out to the pumpkin patch, playing in the hay loft, eating apple cider donuts, and much more. Read on to find out why Treinen Farm receives my approval for one of the must-visit places to go in Wisconsin in the fall and my vote for the best corn maze near Madison, WI.

Things to Do at Treinen Farm

Get Lost in the Best Corn Maze Near Madison, WI

There are so many reasons to visit Treinen Farms, but the impressive corn maze is at the top of the list. Treinen Farm not only has one of the best corn mazes in Wisconsin, but one of the best in the USA! USA Today ranked the farm as the 5th best corn maze in the USA in 2021!

The corn maze has been a staple at the family run farm since 2001. Every year a different design is created, designed, and made in the corn field.  “Crane Dance Corn Maze” was the design for 2019. This year is the “Biophilia: Tree Swing Corn Maze”. It is centered around the connection between humans and nature.

I have been to a few corn mazes in the past, but never one as big as this one. Past corn mazes I wandered around in and tried to get lost with no goal in mind. You can do that here, but the best parts of this maze are the games within.

Before entering the maze I recommend getting a map, well an eighth of a map! Your goal will be to find all the other puzzle pieces in the corn maze to complete the map.

If that isn’t enough of a challenge for you there are extra challenges. Our initial goal in the maze was to find all eight of the puzzle pieces. We successfully completed that and then tried to find the 10 hidden hole punch stations in the maze. Unlike the puzzle piece locations, the hole punch locations are not marked on the map. After two hours we had only found four of the ten hole punches. Here’s a little tip, do both at the same time and track your route!

We also attempted the hardest challenge. Let’s just say we found out later we were in the wrong maze! My only clue I will give you is that there is more than one maze. Make sure to turn in your map at the end and receive prizes….if you earned them that is!

I appreciate all the work that went into creating the corn maze and the additional challenges within. If you are someone that needs a bit of encouragement before doing a childlike activity, here you go…… there were a ton of adults in the maze without any children! The challenges are pretty, well, challenging!

There is a separate children’s maze, because the main maze will tire out little ones very quickly. They may get excited when they find the puzzle pieces and hole punch stations, but it does take a bit of stamina and strategy to find them all.

Pick Your Favorite Pumpkin

Treinen Farm Pumpkin Patch & Hayride

Find your way out of the corn maze before 5pm to take a hayride to the pumpkin patch. On the way there and back the driver shares some stories about the farm. Sitting on the hay filled wagon pulled by horses was the quintessential fall experience for me. We headed out right before 5pm when the sun was starting to set. The air became crisper and the countryside was filled with the golden colors of autumn.

The pumpkin patch is really big. There were moments where we could hardly see anyone else. Maybe that is because I had to go to the far side of the pumpkin patch…..I am one of those people who has to check over each one before deciding. When I visited everyone could take one pumpkin. As long as you could carry it, you could take it. Sadly you have to pay for your pumpkin now. They are $8 ahead of time for any size, or $3 – $15 in person, depending on the size.

2022 Update: Hayrides are not happening this year. There are three pumpkin patches within walking distance. You can take a wheelbarrow with you.

Don’t worry you don’t need to carry it all the way back to your car. You can either put it in pumpkin daycare and come back for it later (how cute it that?) or take it in a wagon back to your car. By the time I took this picture it was getting later in the evening so most people had already reclaimed their pumpkins, but a lot of people do leave their pumpkins here. Like any parent I was worried about leaving my pumpkin here for a few hours, but he was safe and sound when I went back to reclaim him!

See the Cute Farm Animals

Treinen Farm Animals

I’m typically not much of a farm animal type of gal, but the little goats and baby pigs were too adorable to resist. I even petted a pig (I usually keep my distance from animals). A few times a day they put on a little informational/entertaining farm show. We saw chickens trying to play the piano and learned about what the pigs and goats like to eat.

Play on the Farm

I went to Treinen Farm expecting to have a great time in the corn maze and a fun hayride out to the pumpkin patch. What I wasn’t expecting was all the other activities around the farm. It is clear that the Treinen family wanted to create a place for people of all ages to have fun together outside. I said it above, but you need to leave your inhibitions at home and be a kid here!

Molehill Mountain Slides at Treinen Farm Lodi, Wisconsin

There are several “natural and farm themed playgrounds”. You can find everything from sandboxes in tires stacked up in a giant pile to huge slides made out of HDPE (yeah I didn’t know what that was either). Be warned, those slides are FAST! I was screaming as I was going down and had no way to stop myself. I felt like I was going to come speeding out of there and crash into anyone in a 5 ft radius. Like everything at the farm, the slides were designed really well and I made a semi-graceful exit…I think!

There is a small corn pit, giant hay bales to jump on and hay loft full of hay, of course, and ropes to climb around on. The list goes on and on!

Challenge Your Friends & Family to Some Games

Pumpkin Slingshot at Treinen Farm

Then there are the games. The duck races were one of my favorites and not just because I won! There are also giant checkers and chess to play. One game I had never seen before and it took us quite awhile to figure out it was even a game. If you see a wooden post with a string hanging out in front of it, it’s a game! The goal is to get the circle on the hook. I consider myself a pretty persistent person, but even I gave up on that one.

The pumpkin slingshot is one of the few games that costs extra. The goal as an adult is to hit the 2nd inflatable horse out in the water. I barely made it to the first one. It’s harder than it seems, ok?

Hike on the Beautiful Countryside Trails

That’s not all! There are also short hiking trails around the property. There may even be some hidden fairy doors! I have found all the Tiny Doors in Atlanta. I can’t wait to go back to Treinen Farm and search for the doors.

If you are looking for the best corn maze near Madison, WI and a fall day out with your family or friends, plan a day at Treinen Farm in Lodi! As an elementary school teacher all the play spaces, games and corn maze challenges made me giddy with excitement because kids (& adults) need places like this! Whether or not you visit with children you will feel like a kid again and have a great time at Treinen Farm.

What to Wear

Bring out your best fall outfit! Well, not your best because you will be walking, jumping, climbing, sitting and doing all sorts of things so make sure your outfit is prepared for that. Wear boots or other sturdy shoes that you don’t mind getting muddy. Really if you aren’t doing all those things you aren’t getting the full farm experience!

Food

Get the cider donuts! Delicious! In addition to the cider donuts the Old Chicken House Store has other fall classics like caramel apples and apple cider. The Wadizzit Traveling food truck has Chocolate Shoppe ice cream and other main dish food truck fare. The boy scouts also sell brats, hotdogs, and other typical festival type food. I found out these fall farm weekends are the biggest fundraiser for the boy scouts. I love that the Treinen family supports the boy scouts in this way.

You can also bring in your own food. There are picnic tables to enjoy food you bring and/or buy.

Toilets

Several porta-a-potties are grouped together near the entrance. There is a water station with soap to wash your hands.
