When you are young and traveling the world solo you gain more confidence than you ever imagined possible. You start to believe you are unstoppable and nothing can hurt you. Unlike people “back home” you have experienced the kindness of strangers and know that traveling isn’t necessarily any more dangerous than staying home. But that’s the point, something can happen anywhere! I’ve had more sprained ankles than I want to count. One of the worst sprains was in the kitchen in my family’s home in Wisconsin! Another time was almost 6,000 miles away in Buenos Aires! Read the full story on my experience with medical care in Buenos Aires.

Whether it is an accident that could happen anywhere, a scary new virus that is spreading quickly or something as minor as missing luggage it is important to buy the best travel insurance.

In this World Nomads travel insurance review I will share with you five reasons why you should choose World Nomads.

#1 Receive Quotes Immediately

Get a Travel Insurance Quote

The first step towards using World Nomads insurance is to get a quote. Ever send a quote for a service and have to wait forever for a reply? Not with World Nomads! All you have to do is enter your destination(s), start date of travel, end date of travel, country of residence and age to receive a quote immediately! You can buy the insurance and start using it the same day. It’s perfect if you forgot to get insurance and need to quickly sign up for a plan before you take off on your adventure.

#2 Straight-forward

World Nomads Travel Insurance Review

When I was in the USA after quitting my teaching job in Russia I needed some short term health-care. Long story short, I was so confused! I was dreading looking for travel insurance, but World Nomads makes it easy. After requesting a quote you can see the two prices. One price for the standard plan and one for the explorer plan. What is included for each plan is clearly explained, alongside how much you are covered for in that particular area. Even though I do adventure activities like hiking and kayaking I always go with the standard plan.

You don’t need to search for any hidden fine print. Even people who have little experience with insurance, can read and understand what they are buying.

#3 Low Cost

If you are from the USA and have ever had to buy your own travel insurance you are probably seeing huge dollar signs with the mention of travel insurance. It’s not as expensive as you think! I know people in the US that pay hundreds of dollars a month for health insurance and they still have to pay a huge chunk of money in deductibles. Unless they have a major accident or illness they are losing money in the end.

With World Nomads the cost is affordable. The only way you lose money is if you don’t claim, which is a good thing because that means your travels went smoothly and safely! If something does happen, you know you are covered and will get reimbursed the full amount as long as it doesn’t exceed your plan.

The cost depends on the length of travel, destinations covered and your citizenship & age. If you are going to different countries or regions, get quotes for the destinations independently and together to see what the cheapest option is.

Let me give you an idea of the costs. For three months to South America I paid $288.55. For coverage in Jamaica, South America and UK for four months I paid $368.28.

#4 Coverage

World Nomads Travel Insurance Coverage

The cost seems even more affordable when you know how much it really covers.Β What frustrates me, well one of the things, about the US health care system is you need to pay so much for health insurance and it doesn’t even cover you 100%. There is so much fine print that prevents you from certain types of medical care. Most of the time you still need to pay a deductible. With World Nomads it is a one time cost and then you are covered.

While in Buenos Aires I had an accident which eventually took me to the ER. After the appointment I ended up booking a last minute flight back to the US in order to receive physical therapy and recover at home. I was planning to stay in Buenos Aires longer and needed to cancel my remaining accommodations. After claiming, the insurance covered my medical visit to the ER, my remaining nights at my accommodation that were not refundable and my flight back to the US.

Here are a few of the different areas you are covered for:

  • Emergency Accident & Sickness Medical Expense

  • Emergency Evacuation & Repatriation

  • Trip Cancellation

  • Trip Interruption

  • Baggage Delay

#5 Customer Service

Once you buy the insurance, you hopefully won’t need it. Rest assured that if you do the customer service team is available to help you 24/7. When I had my injury in Argentina I was feeling lost about where to seek medical care. I contacted customer service and they responded with a recommended clinic. I chose that clinic and had a good experience, as good as any medical experience can be!

#6 Make & Receive Claims

How to make a claim with world nomads

Finally, you hope you will never need to claim with World Nomads and your money was just used for piece of mind. If you do need to claim, know that you can actually do so and you will receive your claim. This is an honest review so I will admit that claiming was a hassle. The process started easily enough with an online claim form. It then became more annoying when I was contacted multiple times after-wards for additional paperwork. Receipts from when I booked flights & accommodations, credit card statements, doctor receipts from both Buenos Aires and US were needed to process my claim.

If they made it too easy I am sure many people would commit insurance fraud. In the end I was just grateful that I received my unused accommodation, a flight back to the US and my medical costs abroad paid for!

I hope this World Nomads travel insurance review helped you to see the benefits of having travel insurance and how easy it is to purchase!Β

I have always wondered if it worth to pay so much money for this insurance. But your post has convinced me that you get so much from it. For the moment I purchase much cheaper my travel insurance from my country but if i’ll ever travel on a long term, I will have to have a different insurance.

Yeah it depends on where you are a citizen too. In the US if you don’t have insurance through work that covers you abroad, it is much cheaper to get travel insurance. I wish I could use travel insurance in the US b/c US insurance is ridiculous πŸ™

I never travel anywhere without getting travel insurance first. Many people don’t think anything will happen to them on their travels, and then boom! I’ve heard of World Nomads insurance, but not sure I can apply from Italy. I’ll take a closer look πŸ™‚

I think that it is so foolish for people to travel without travel insurance. I like that you set out how easy it is and also, how inexpensive it is. I think people are fooled into believing it will set them back so much money.

Thank you! I agree, I think a lot of people see travel insurance as wasted money. It’s hard if you have never had anything happen before, but once you do you will be grateful!

I really think sometimes the spending behind travel insurance is worth it. You have summed up some really important points here about the low cost and the services the insurances cover. I need to reconsider and go for one very soon.

Travel insurance is definitely worth it! If you don’t have travel insurance yet, World Nomads is a great one to use.

Helpful post. I usually use insuremytrip (it aggregates a number of companies) but I have been considering World Nomad for my longer trips. Good to know that you’ve had a good experience with it.

So helpful! I’ve heard a lot of good things about World Nomads and love that they cover for trip interruption/delay. I’ve had a couple times where my connecting flight was cancelled due to weather which unfortunately means you are on your own for hotel expenses. Wish I had this coverage then!
