Wondering where to stay in NYC? Staying outside of Manhattan in one of NYC’s other four boroughs is a smart choice. You will typically save money and get a nicer room, while exploring more than the crowded, tourist areas of the city. The cheap hotels in Queens NY are the way to go! The Grandview Hotel in the Flushing neighborhood of Queens is the perfect place to stay if you want a nice private room and bathroom at an affordable price.

I’ve been so impressed with both of my two week stays at the Grandview New York. In this Grandview Hotel New York review I will give you an honest review of the pros and cons of staying at this hotel in Flushing, Queens.

Cost

Where to Stay in NYC

One of the most important factors for choosing a hotel is the cost. This is what ultimately made me search for hotels in Flushing NY and book the Grandview Hotel. You wouldn’t book this hotel based on it’s location, except if you are looking for a place to stay near LGA airport, Citi Field or another place in the Flushing neighborhood. If you are a visitor hoping to do the usual touristy activities and cost isn’t a factor in your hotel choice I would look in Manhattan. On my very first visit to NYC when I fell in love with the city I got to stay at the Crowne Plaza overlooking Times Square!

But if you can’t splurge and need to consider cost, continue reading! There are not many places in Manhattan where you will find a private room and bathroom that is as clean and with as nice of amenities for the price of the Grandview Hotel. Just to give you an idea of prices, the screenshot below shows the number of properties available in NYC for each price range for one night this month. The Grandview Hotel nightly price usually falls between $90 – $110 USD.

The Grandview Hotel New York

Grandview Hotel is a fairly small hotel with about 40 rooms. There are not a lot of communal spaces in the hotel. The lobby was small, but I loved the bright red Chinese decorations in the summer. When I visited in November I saw the tail end of the Halloween decorations and then the fall decor. In the lobby you will find a small counter with a microwave and coffee maker. On the ground floor there is a restroom, ice machine and vending machines. If you are driving here you will be happy to know there is free parking on site, a rare occurrence in NYC!

Cleanliness

Room at the grandview hotel

For me another big factor in choosing a hotel is the cleanliness. On my initial visit my only complaint was that there were some stains on the floor. It seemed odd because the hotel had a very new, modern and clean feel. It seemed that the stains were cleaned, but just didn’t go away. They have updated the floors now and on my last visit I had brand new carpets in my room. Other than that, on both stays everything was perfectly clean when I arrived and when I returned every-night. Towels and sheets are provided fresh every day if you would like. The trash cans were empty and I could tell that the desk space was wiped down and the carpet was vacuumed daily.

Several days I left pretty late in the day. The housekeeping staff was always really good about respecting the do not disturb sign on my door and cleaning my room late in the afternoon after I had left. In my two weeks I never had to ask for my toiletries or towels to be replenished or changed.

As I was living out of my suitcases and staying in the hotel some days to work I had a lot of stuff and had the room set up to live in for my time there. The staff was very respectful of my stuff and I never found it moved or missing from where I left it.

Smoking is not allowed in any of the rooms, so of course there were no negatives smells anywhere in the room or building.

Rooms & Amenities

Grandview Hotel room

Like most NYC hotel rooms, the rooms are small. Space is at a premium in NYC. If you have only traveled around the USA you might be surprised at how small the rooms are. But you aren’t in NYC to stay in your room anyway, right?

Despite the lack of space the rooms are designed to optimize the space and contain everything you would need. I had a very comfortable queen sized bed that came with four pillows.

The room had a large closet, two smaller cabinets with shelves and two drawers. An iron and ironing board are in the closet. There is a desk chair and desk space that has a TV, phone, alarm clock, coffee tray and small empty space for eating or working. I did some re-arranging to maximize that space.

While the windows do open (did you know there are a lot of hotels these days where you can’t open the windows?), you can also control the heat & AC in the room. There is overhead lighting and also two different types of lighting over the bed. Outlets are located in convenient spots, such as on the wall over the desk and on the headboard of the bed.

I loved having a small refrigerator with a freezer section in the room. You can use the ice bucket to get ice on the ground floor.

A very important factor for me when I travel is WiFi. The only downside here was that I had to re-login every time I used it. It was pretty quick to do so and a minor inconvenience considering how good the WiFI worked. In the two weeks I was there it was never down and I had a fast connection at all times of the day. Honestly it was the best WiFi I have had all year. With the number of places I have stayed in, that’s saying something!

Staff

The English and Chinese speaking staff always greeted me when I arrived or left the hotel. When I checked in they gave me a room preference based on the side of the building.

Location

The Grandview Hotel is located in Queens, one of New York City’s five boroughs. Within Queens the hotel is in a mostly residential area of the Flushing neighborhood. There are a couple of stores, fast food restaurants and a grocery store about a block away. The grocery store is open every-day from 6am – 12pm. The nearest laundromat is about a 10 minute walk away. Other than a movie theater, a 7 minute walk away, there isn’t really anything to do in the vicinity.

During the day the area is perfectly safe to walk around. In the late evening and overnight it isn’t necessarily unsafe, but there are not a lot of people walking around so I always took the bus back to the hotel. The bus stop to return back to the hotel is across the street so you don’t need to worry about getting back late at night.

The New World Mall Food Court in Downtown Flushing

About a 17 minute walk or a 10 minute bus ride is the commercial and retail part of Flushing. It is filled with Asian stores and restaurants. The New World Mall on Main Street has Asian stores, restaurants and a food court. The food court is a great place to try different Asian cuisines at reasonable prices.  SkyView Center has typical American chain stores including Target.

The main part of Flushing is much busier than the immediate area around the hotel. It’s not quite as crazy as Times Square, but it comes close. In the middle of the night there are significantly less people, but still enough to feel safe waiting for the bus. I waited for the bus several times after 1am with no problems….except for the night where the garbage truck went by and myself and everyone else in line were gagging! But if you have never been to NYC, I hate to break it to you, that is everywhere in the city!

How to Get to The Grandview Hotel

While the location is safe and you might even enjoy staying in a really ethnic, local neighborhood the location is not great for getting around the city. That being said there is a bus stop right outside the door that connects to other buses and the main subway stop in Flushing. Both the bus and subway run 24/7 so you can leave and return by public transportation whenever you want.

Be prepared that it will take about an hour to get to Times Square & Midtown Manhattan during the day and early evening. Late at night it can take even longer. If you walk between the hotel and the subway station in downtown Flushing in can be faster if the bus isn’t coming in the next five minutes.

Taxis are always an option as well, but a much more expensive one. Airport shuttles are not quite as expensive as taxis but much simpler than taking public transportation.

Getting to the Grandview Hotel from JFK Airport

From within JFK airport follow the signs to the AirTran. Get on the AirTran that goes to Jamaica station. Get off at the Jamaica station stop. In order to exit the station you will need to buy a $5 ticket + $1 MTA card (unless you have a card already). You will need to put more money on your card to be able to take the next bus (easier than paying on the bus). I recommend buying a weekly card. There are free bathrooms at this station that are kept clean.

After you have bought your MTA card exit the station (there is an elevator) to street level where you will get on the Q25 bus going towards College Point. You will be on the bus going through Queens for about 50 minutes. Get off the bus at the Linden Pl/31st Rd stop.

Getting to the Grandview Hotel from LGA Airport

From LGA airport follow the signs to the public buses. Buy an MTA card and put money on the card. I recommend buying a weekly card.

You will need to take a Q48 bus towards towards Flushing Main street. After about 20 minutes you will get off at Roosevelt Ave & Main street.

Then you will transfer to a Q25 bus. Wait for the bus on the same side of the road as the New World Mall. Get off the bus at the Linden Pl/31st Rd stop.

Getting to Manhattan from the Grandview Hotel

To go most places in NYC you will need to walk about 17 minutes to the Main St. subway station or take the Q50 or Q25 bus from outside the hotel door to the Main St. & 40th Rd stop. Either way you take the 7 train to your destination or transfer at some point along the journey. The last stop on the 7 is Main Street so you don’t need to worry about going the correct direction when you are returning to the hotel. You can reach Grand Central Station & Times Square on the 7.

Buses in Queens

A couple things to remember when taking buses.

1. At busy bus stops like the one in Downtown Flushing at Main St. & Roosevelt Ave there are a lot of people. Therefore people wait for the bus in a very orderly line. This line can have 50 people in it. Surprisingly everyone almost always fits on the bus!

2. Unlike subways that stop at every stop on the route, buses only stop if they see someone waiting to get on the bus or someone requests a stop.

3. To request a stop pull the cord or press the stop button before your stop.

Hopefully this Grandview Hotel New York Review gave you a better idea of the pros and cons of staying at this hotel. NYC is huge and it is common for visitors and locals of all socio-economic levels to use the public transport. No matter where you stay in the city you will need to use buses or subways. With the Grandview Hotel Flushing you will be spending more time. If this isn’t a concern for you, it may be worth it to have a nice hotel at a good price, like it was for me!

I’ve sadly never been to New York, but I’m glad you shared this hotel review. I like to hear what other people think about locations and getting around before I ever book my trip. This is good information – for me an hour is too long of a commute to get into the city, but if it were are really great deal I might try!

    • admin

Oh my goodness you need to visit NYC! Yeah the commute is a big downside and might not be worth it for everyone. NYC is hard though because unless you are only going to visit one neighborhood you can end up spending a lot of time on public transportation no matter where you live or stay.

Cool looking place. Darcee & I often find places kind of outside of the main area to save money as long as there good access to public transportation. 17 or so minutes walk to the subway station form the Grand View doesn’t seem too bad. Grandview seems basic enough which to be honest is usually a plus for me because I really don’t want to hang out at the hotel if I am travelling to explore something. Overall, I think it is a good spot but as long you don’t stay out too late or party to hard in manhattan it should be cool to explore a different borough of NYC

I like to stay outside of the main areas too. It’s nice to see how the locals live and to save money of course. It was annoying to get back to the hotel late, but I did it almost every night so it is possible! In many cities transportation shuts down at around midnight, but not NYC! I always bring a good book and it isn’t so bad 🙂

The Grandview looks like a nice comfortable hotel. I’m heading to New York this fall and I will definitely consider staying here for my upcoming trip. It seems like a great starting point for exploring the city. Thank you for this lovely recommendation.

Grandview Hotel looks absolutely amazing and from your description is one of the best places to stay in New York. I am not sure I’d be able to find it using public transportation, but it should be a good landmark for everybody. The interior design is modern and the architecture looks so specific for the continent.

    • admin

Yes, the Grandview Hotel is a modern hotel that is overall very nice, especially considering the price. If you aren’t familiar with the NYC transportation system I am sure it would be a little challenging at first, but regardless of where you stay you will probably end up using it. Hopefully my directions help if you ever end up staying here and locals are usually great about helping tourists too!

Grandview Hotel looks like a great place located near the airport, the rooms look comfortable and clean. I do like that I would be able to open the windows and bring in some fresh air. I’ve never been to NYC so think I’d be looking for more central like Manhattan as you suggested.

There is a lot of pros to staying at Grandview Hotel. But it is understandable that you might like to be closer to Midtown and Times Square on your first visit.

  • Jennifer Prince

This looks like such a perfect place to stay in NYC. And what a great deal! I can’t believe it’s just around $100. I’ll definitely be checking this out when I’m in NY in January. So fun!! <3
