Is it doughnuts or donuts? Who cares because either way you spell it the donuts in Atlanta are delicious. Cheap donuts, fancy donuts, small donuts, loaded donuts, you can find them all in the perimeter (ITP) of Atlanta. Every donut place in this post is ITP or has a least one location ITP. Of course they have all been expertly and professionally taste tested by yours truly!

I should add an additional disclaimer to this post that you shouldn’t read it when you are hungry! If you do you’re going to want to stop whatever you are doing and go buy a donut….or ten, after knowing where to find the best donuts in Atlanta!

The Best Donuts in Atlanta

There are so many great donut places in Atlanta and the metro area. Doesn’t it fill your heart with glee to see all these delicious options!?

Da Vinci’s Donuts

The Best Atlanta Donuts

The best donuts in Atlanta may be at Da Vinci’s Donuts! Their version is a little smaller than most other donut shops in Atlanta. They claim that you can feel less guilt eating their smaller donuts. I don’t know who they are trying to fool, because all that means is you are going to eat more donuts! If it makes you feel better you can keep on thinking that though!

I love the artsy concept of their donuts as well. The donuts are all the same cake style variety. They have a tiny hole, but are mostly pure light and tender goodness. Then it is on to the toppings! You can either order one of their gourmet varieties or create your own. It’s perfect because you don’t need to worry about your favorite donut running out at the end of the day. Any of the gourmet varieties or your own creation can be made at any time.

I wanted to create my own, but I was too overwhelmed with all the options. I went with the s’mores, salted caramel, maple bacon, and caramel crunch. I mean when they have such good options, why do all the work myself trying to come up with the perfect combo? I loved them all, but the s’mores was my top choice.

All of their locations are in northern Atlanta and the northern metro area. They are close to the Chattahoochee River Trails, if you want to burn off the calories hiking! If not, don’t even worry about it. Whatever you do, don’t buy only one though. Let me tell you if you only buy one of these delicious nuggets you will regret it.

Revolution Doughnuts

The best doughnuts in Atlanta

Revolution Doughnuts is focused on simple, original doughnuts that are handmade. The founder was inspired by farm to table food and wanted to create doughnuts made with real ingredients. Organic flour, local dairy products, fresh fruit, natural flavors, and 100% trans-fat free vegetable oil are used in the doughnuts. Vegan and gluten free doughnuts are also available.

Sometimes attempts to make unhealthy food a little better for you take out the “delicious” in the food, but not the doughnuts here! They are amazing. The frosting on the raspberry sprinkle is actually made with raspberries and tastes like it too. None of that fake sugary fruity flavor. I also loved the chocolate glazed. It doesn’t get more classic than that, but oh so good.

You can find Revolution Donuts in Inman Park and Decatur, two of Atlanta’s best neighborhoods for walking around, good food, and street art.

Five Daughter’s Bakery

gourmet donuts in Atlanta

If you are looking for gourmet donuts in Atlanta look no further than Five Daughter’s Bakery. They are definitely the most expensive Atlanta donuts, but also the fanciest.

The bakery hand crafts 100 layer donuts. They have a different consistency and flavor than other traditional yeast donuts. Staple flavors such as chocolate sea salt and vanilla cream can be bought year round. They also have different seasonal flavors every month. If you happen to catch the pumpkin chocolate in the fall you will thank me later. It was creme filled and oozing with sugary goodness.

While they also bake traditional yeast raised donuts, I recommend trying one of the 100 layer donuts for something a little different. They are worth every penny!

You can find them in two foodie hotspots in Atlanta, Ponce City Market and Westside Provisions.

Sarah Donuts

The best donuts in Atlanta

Not only are Sarah Donuts some of the best donuts in Atlanta, they are also the cheapest. As of writing they will only set you back $1.08. Make sure to bring cash as there is a $4 minimum for credit card. I guess you could just buy more donuts instead!

Sarah Donuts has a large selection of cake and raised donuts. Most are simply varieties with only one glaze on top. The chocolate glazed is my favorite. They do have an assortment of speciality donuts as well. Sometimes a simple, really good glazed donut is all you need though.

You will find Sarah Donuts in multiple locations in the metro area. They are also handy to east Atlanta in North Decatur.

Sublime Doughnuts

“Eat one that’s worth it”. I couldn’t agree more with Sublime Doughnut’s tagline. It’s so true, when you are devouring a lot of calories you want them to be good. With some of the best doughnuts in Atlanta, you know the extra calories are worth it.

It is really hard to choose flavors at Sublime doughnuts, they are all sublime! You know I had to say it! There are a lot of interesting flavors and many candy topping varieties such as Nestle Crunch, Oreo, and Butterfinger. The Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup was perfection. I also really enjoyed the dulce de leche, but the peanut butter one was the winner for me.

The doughnuts themselves are very good, but it is the toppings that really added the extra wow factor.

Sublime doughnuts are located near Georgia Tech and in North Druid Hills.

Krispy Kreme Doughnuts

best donut places in Atlanta

Yes, Krispy Kreme is a chain found in many locations around the world. BUT their donuts are so good. Just because it is a chain doesn’t mean they aren’t good. Plus once you live in a place where you can’t reach Krispy Kreme in less than a couple hours you have a whole new appreciation for these glazed delights.

The original glazed doughnuts are always a good choice. They always have iced, glazed, and cake donuts in an assortment of varieties. There is usually an assortment of seasonal doughnuts in fun shapes, designs, and flavors.

The Ponce de Leon location in Atlanta is temporarily closed. There are a lot in the surrounding area. There’s one at the ATL airport in concourse C. It is right at the top of the escalators coming up from the plane train. It’s not always open and when it is there is always a long line. Getting a donut is a good reason to miss a flight, right?

Almost the Best Donuts in Atlanta

I hope you will agree with me once you try all the donut places above that they have some of the best donuts in Atlanta. Those were all my top picks at least. Everyone has different tastes, so here are some more donut places in Atlanta that didn’t make my “best of Atlanta” list, but are still good and worth a try.

Sweet Hut Bakery

Sweet Hut Bakery

Sweet Hut is a bakery and cafe with multiple locations around the metro area. They have a huge selection of desserts and baked goods. The desserts are behind the counter and the bakery items are self serve and wrapped in plastic.

They have a variety of classic donuts with fun toppings. I tried the Oreo donut. It was really good, but it didn’t leave me begging to go back for more donuts. I would definitely go back to try more of Sweet Hut’s other deserts and bakery items.

The Midtown location offers free two hour parking validation if you park in the Metropolis garage. It is just around the corner from Mukja Korean Fried Chicken, a really good fried chicken place. It is one of my favorite Asian restaurants in the city.

Hero Doughnuts

Hero Doughnuts

I really wanted to love Hero Doughnuts. I love supporting small businesses and they are close to one of my favorite BBQ spots in Atlanta in Summerhill. Plus they rated highly on Yelp, which I find is usually pretty accurate for food places. I thought both the donuts I tried were good, but it wasn’t the amazing experience I have had at other doughnut places in Atlanta.

Maybe the doughnuts were having an off day or maybe I was! I would give Hero Doughnuts another chance and see if they can be my doughnut hero after-all.

Sweet Stack Creamery

doughnuts in Atlanta

What could be better than a donut? The answer would have to be ice cream sandwiched between a donut! I love the idea of combining two delicious sweet treats together.

While the donut was good, I wouldn’t go just for the donut. Sweet Stack is mainly an ice cream place and despite being a donut lover, the ice cream was the best part of the sandwich. They serve a wide variety of ice cream that can be eaten on its own or as a donut or cookie sandwich. Flavors range from originals like vanilla to more unusual ones such as Amber Rose, a cotton candy flavored ice cream with pop rocks. The OG, a cookies and cream variety, was really good. A few vegan flavors are also available. There are lots of toppings and sauces to make your concoctions even fancier.

When you are in the neighborhood, go around the corner to Helen’s Hot Chicken. They have some of the best and cheapest chicken and waffles in Atlanta.

I can’t believe I finished this post without needing a donut break. I guess I need to reward myself now. The only problem is which of these Atlanta donut shops should I go back to first? Let me know in the comments below which one is at the top of your list to try.
