February’s museum of the month is el Museo del Historia de Arrecife, the museum of history, in Arrecife, Lanzarote (one of the Canary Islands). It is located inside el Castillo del San Gabriel (the San Gabriel Castle). Come along with me as I review my experience at the museum and see for yourself if it is one of the best things to do in Arrecife or not!

Museo del Historia Review

I stayed right across the street from the castle at Hotel Miramar so it was a must to go and visit.

Inside el Museo de Historia

The museum’s location within a castle is interesting because it helps to transport you to years ago. While it is always fun to be inside of a castle, this one is pretty small and honestly doesn’t have a lot to see.

The museum is mostly boards to read with information on Arrecife’s history. Everything from pirate raids to the geography of the region. I was able to gain some information because I am able to read Spanish, but if you can’t read Spanish the museum will not have much interest to you. All the information is only in Spanish and there aren’t a great deal of photos or artifacts to help you understand the content.

El Museo del Historia Rooftop

Don’t forget to climb the stairs up to the top of the museum. The 360 degree views from the rooftop were definitely my favorite part of the museum.

Around el Museo del Historia

I’m usually a big fan of museums, but I was coming from dark & cold Russia where I was living to bright and sunny Lanzarote, so I wanted to be outside. It was interesting to learn a bit of history, but I actually enjoyed the area surrounding the castle much more than being inside the castle. I honestly could not stop taking pictures in various spots of the water with the sun glistening off of it.

Unless you know Spanish, are an avid history lover and/or it is a rainy day I would recommend just wandering around outside of el Museo de Historia in Arrecife. Instead of going inside spend your time admiring the water and exploring everything else there is to do in Arrecife.

Museo del Historia Visiting Information

Where

Calle Punta de la Lagarta, 35500 Arrecife, Lanzarote, Spain

How to Get There

Taxi from anywhere or take the intercity bus  to the parque viejo stop. I found the Moovit App to be the most helpful for public transit directions throughout Lanzarote. Walking from within Arrecife.

Toilets

No toilets inside. You can go across the street and sneak into Hotel Miramar and use the toilets on the 6th floor.
