One of the great parts of visiting the island of Lanzarote, one of the Spanish Canary Islands, is that you can stay in any resort town and take day trips to see all the sights and try out the different activities available. The island is pretty small so you are able to see a lot of it in only a few days. One of the most unique things to do is go on a submarine dive with Submarine Safaris Lanzarote. I’m all about trying new activities, so when I saw the Puerto Calero submarine experience I knew I needed to give it a try. Continue reading to find out what you can expect!

Transportation

Like all the excursions and day trips on Lanzarote you don’t need to worry about having your own transportation. Pick-ups and drop-offs from your resort town are included in the price. I was staying in Playa Blanca on the day I did my submarine trip. My resort was very handy to the designated pick-up spot across the street. Pick-ups are also available from other other resort towns such as Puerto del Carmen, and Costa Tequise.

While the pick-up/drop-off system in Lanzarote for day trips is easy and convenient, the only downside is that it can take a long time. If you are picked up first you might spent an hour or so picking up other people. The first time or two that you take a day trip it is nice to see the island, but after a couple of times it feels like a lot of time on the bus. Especially for the submarine trip, because the actual dive is only an hour. That being said unless you have a car it is the most economical and easiest way to get to the dive.

Puerto Calero

Once you arrive in the port city of Puerto Calero you will have some time to explore before your dive. There are a few restaurants and stores along and close to the water.

I found the stores to be a bit more upmarket and worldwide compared to the souvenir stores along the marina in Playa Blanca.

I lucked out that I was in Puerto Calero on a Tuesday when they have their local market right on the marina.

Puerto Calero Submarine Safety Briefing

Submarine Safaris Lanzarote

The actual submarine experience starts with a safety briefing in their storefront, which I missed the beginning of to use the toilet. There would be nothing like being trapped on a submarine without a bathroom! Instead of watching the safety video from the rows of chairs, watch by the door. Then you are one of the first ones out the door, in line and into the submarine.

Boarding the Submarine

As I mentioned arriving late to the safety briefing actually worked out in my favor because I was one of the last people to return to the store and thus one of the first people to leave and line up for the submarine. You want to be towards the front of the line when getting on the submarine because then you have your pick of seats!

If you have ever bought a souvenir photo before you know it costs an arm and a leg. Instead of paying for that at the end, take a quick photo on the walk to the submarine or up on the dock right after your dive before the next group boards.

The Submarine Dive

One of the guides suggested that I sit up front in one of the single seats because I was alone. Initially I was a little annoyed that I didn’t get to choose my seat, but it was for the best. Everyone was jealous of me because the fish were all in front of my window! If possible sit towards the front on the right side because that is where they drop off food to attract the fish when you are waiting to submerge into the water.

Perhaps they change up the location of where they drop the food, but regardless I had a great view of the captains and out the front window as well.

Look, I am the Captain!

We got up close to a few ships that sank 7, 10 and 14 years ago.

There is a little video screen under each window that shows you what is going on above the submarine. It shows when we are slowly sinking into the water. It also gives some data underwater, like how deep we are.

Going under!

The submarine is 18.5 m long, 4 m wide and 6.5 m high. It can hold up to 44 passengers. In the middle of the journey we were able to stand up and walk around before we turned around. Not that there was much space to walk around in!  I didn’t feel cramped at all, but I also don’t suffer from claustrophobia or have any fears of water.

The Puerto Calero submarine adventure is a short experience, but a memorable one! I mean how often do you get to go 30 meters (~98ft) underwater without getting wet? The submarine dive is safe and enjoyable for the whole family. Book with Submarine Safaris Lanzarote today!
