The year-round warm temperatures in the Canary Islands make the islands the perfect destination for any month of the year. Playa Blanca in Lanzarote (one of the Canary Islands) is the perfect place to base yourself for a week of sunshine, relaxation and exploration. The resort town of Playa Blanca is located on the southern tip of the island along the ocean. You can easily drive or take a day tour to all the best places on the island or spend your time along the beachfront. Continue reading to find out what to do in Playa Blanca, Lanzarote.
Things to Do in Playa Blanca
Sunbath and Swim at the Beaches
One of the best things to do in Playa Blanca is to head to the oceanfront of course! There are three main beaches, Playa Flamingo, Playa Blanca, and Playa Dorado within the resort town. It is about a 30 minute walk from Playa Flamingo to Playa Dorado. Playa Blanca is about halfway in between the two. There are also a few other beaches further out from the center of the town. You can easily walk to the beaches from many of the resorts.
Playa Blanca, the beach that the town is named after, is one of the smallest and most popular beaches. It is located along the busiest part of the boardwalk. It is handy to all of the restaurants and stores, but that also means it is pretty touristy. Despite the number of people, the beach is known for its cleanliness.
Playa Flamingo offers calm waters for swimming and a convenient location to restaurants above the beach as well. Playa Dorado is known for its golden sand and is slightly more local, but is still close to restaurants and stores.
Take a Boat Trip or Do a Watersport
Considering Playa Blanca’s location along the water there are a lot of options for water sports, boat trips and ferries to other islands. A lot of the water activities start from Marina Rubicon, others include pick-ups that take you to nearby beaches. Lineas Romero is a family owned company that offers a variety of ferry and boat trips. They always provide daily boat taxi service between Playa Blanca, Marina Rubicón and Papagayo beach.
Nearby Papagayo beach, which is actually several beaches separated by cliffs, is a great place for water sports. One morning I did a day trip with Kayak Lanzarote. We kayaked from Playa de las Coloradas to Playa de Papagayo, where we got out of our kayaks and went snorkeling. You can also do a catamaran cruise to Papagayo beach. It includes lunch and water activities such as snorkeling and kayaking.
I have never tried diving before, but if you love it or want to give it a try there is a really cool place here. Museo Atlantico is an underwater museum that you can dive to and explore!
Walk the Promenade
The promenade in Playa Blanca is over 6 miles long. It goes from the Faro de Pechiguera light house in the west all the way to the Marina Rubicon in the east. This pedestrian only path is perfect for enjoying the beautiful views of the water.
Eat Along the Promenade
I don’t know about you, but I love eating outdoors with views of the water. There are a huge variety of restaurants to choose from, especially near Playa Blanca. Many of the restaurants are designed so you can eat inside in the shade and still have great views of the sea.
At all the restaurants I saw there were English menus and all the waiters spoke English, but here and throughout my trip I chose to speak in Spanish whenever possible. I even got on the Spanish eating schedule of having lunch at around 3 or 4pm and dinner at around 8 or 9pm.
Shopping in Playa Blanca
The shopping options in the central part of the town are mostly souvenir shops and chain stores. There are quite a few along the promenade and along Calle Limones which runs parallel to the promenade.
I didn’t try the fish spa, but I had heard about it before. The idea of having a foot bath with fish eating the dried skin off my feet sounds interesting, but not that appealing. Would you give it a try?
At Marina Rubicon you can of course find a lot of boats and the water activities I mentioned above, but you can also find restaurants and boutique shops. Every Wednesday and Saturday morning there is a local market.
Day Trips from Playa Blanca
You can easily spend all your time in Playa Blanca at your resort or along the beachfront. There is so much culture and interesting landscapes around the island that you may want to take some day trips. Some of my favorites included:
- Visiting Timanfaya National Park
- Hiking the Fire Mountains
- Taking a Submarine Trip
- Learning about César Manrique’s influence on the island by visiting many of his creations around the island.
Whether you want to lounge at the beach everyday or discover more of the island, Playa Blanca is a great resort town to stay in Lanzarote. I loved my stay at the Boutique Hotel H10 White Suites. I hope you enjoy discovering all the great things to do in Playa Blanca and the rest of the island!

I was wondering about the prices – the places seem to cater for tourists , are they also tourist prices in the restaurants ?
The Fearless Foreigner
Good question! Playa Blanca is pretty touristy in general so the majority of the restaurants in town are along the boardwalk. I don’t really remember the prices, they seemed normal to me.
